Washington Park Bandshell
The Washington Park Bandshell was completed in 1940 using Works Progress Administration (WPA) funding. Complete details of it are described in the Wittenberg Enterprise newspaper article.
In 2013, it was determined that the bandshell needed help because of disrepair. The Wittenburg Area Lioness Club promoted the restoration of the bandshell. It recognized its historic significance to the Village not only because of graduation ceremonies and the performances of the Village Band but also because of the many local people who helped to build it and one of the last historic landmarks remaining in the community. With a generous donation by Robert Neuske, president of Neuske's Applewood Smoked Meats, the renovation began. It wound up costing $147,656, and this effort brought the historic bandshell back to its former distinction. Much work was done as described in the letter to the Village from Mr. Neuske. It is hoped that it will last a long time, and Mr. Neuske has pledged he will continue to help, if need be, in the future. A dedication was held on September 11, 2013, with Robert Neuske speaking and commemorating the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. The Wittenberg High School band performed and it was announced that two new scholarships would be made available. |
Various events are held at Washington Park and utilize the Bandshell as part of the day's activities.
They include Community Days, FFA Annual Corn Roast, Walls of Wittenberg, and Second Tuesday summer concerts.
