Bayfield
Civic League - Memorial Park Gazebo
In 1913, the gazebo was built on property located across the street from its current site and was owned by Bayfield Civic League. Originally it was built for local residents to come, sit, and wait for boats or just to enjoy the views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. William Sinclair was the builder and was paid $254.25; funds to build it were borrowed from a bank. In the 1930s it was moved across the street to property also owned by the Bayfield Civic League. Known as the Gazebo in Memorial Park, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the purpose of the League to keep this land known as Memorial Park a green space. It also has memorials to Bayfield veterans of all wars and the crew of the U.S.S. Bayfield (1943-1968).
The gazebo was fully restored by the spring of 2024 with a cost in the neighborhood of $100,000. Included were the installation of a concrete foundation, replacement of wood-clad steel columns, seating benches, and flooring and roof repair.
In the last 10 years, League has installed 21 benches, new entrance railings, imporved landscaping, and repavement of walking paths in the Park.
