Memorial Park Bandshell
The bandshell is centraly located Memorial Park on a one block site in the City of Durand. Other features of the Park include a playground, a shelter, and a monument to veterans.
According to the local paper, Courier-Wedge, May 26, 1983, the "Original cost of the bandshell was $2,297...the Durand school district in July 1925...approved the bandshell at the site of the former school (now Memorial Park). Two weeks later, nearly $1500 had been collected in subscriptions and the remainder was earned before dedication Sept. 22."
A further article printed Nov. 20, 2003, "When the shell was built in 1925 it was funded primarily by donations... August 13, 1925 the city signed Arthur J. Mahar to contract of $1,765 to build the shell... Mahar finished the shell by Sept. 22, 1925. There was a dedication ceremony held at the shell where A. C. Schey led the Durand band in concert. Hundreds of people gathered for the occasion and the event was a success. It was said that the band shell would not only provide accommodation for the excellent city band, but would also provide a place for community projects." These articles were published to provide background for raising funds for renovations of the bandshell needed in 1983 and later in 2003-05.
