Rib Mountain State Park
Noon Kiwanis Scenic Amphitheater
The Scenic Amphitheater sits atop Rib Mountain and has a splendid view of the City of Wausau.
Rib Mountain Park Superintendent Ken Lemons and Greg Huber have provided the following information, gathered from a Friends of Rib Mountain December 1996 newsletter. (It is paraphrased to a certain extent.)
In 1993-94, the need for an outdoor space to present programming was discussed by the WI Department of Natural Resources (DNR). A DNR engineer drew up the plans and estimated that the cost would be $18,500. However, the actual cost rose to about $31,500. The Noon Kiwanis Club donated $13,500, a Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant of $5,000 was awarded, the Friends of Rib Mountain State Park gave $10,000, and Wausau Tile donated $3,000 worth of tile for the stage area.
The Scenic Amphitheater benefitted from volunteer work done by the Friends group. In addition, area Boy Scouts put in the handrails and the split rail fence behind the stage. DNR and teen work crews from Lincoln Hills Youth Facility, now closed, put in the permanent benches and did the landscaping. Without this volunteer help, the cost would have been much higher. The Scenic Amphitheater was completed in September of 1996.
