University of Wisconsin Memorial Union, UW Credit Union Terrace Stage
The UW Credit Union TERRACE STAGE is located at the University of Wisconsin Union Terrace on the shores of Lake Mendota. The first stage/bandstand was introduced to the Terrace in the 1980s. The current bandstand premiered in 2016 when the Terrace was extensively renovated. When not in use for performances, visitors take advantage of the extra space and move tables and chairs onto the stage. The Terrace, created in 1928, sits between the Memorial Union building and Lake Mendota. Charlotte Peabody, UW graduate in landscape architecture and daughter of Memorial Union Building architect Arthur Peabody, was the designer. The Terrace is a favorite place and the hub of the campus. The atmosphere is festive, often with dancing and boats docked off the shoreline listening to the music. Beer, grilled brats, popcorn, and the fabulous Babcock ice cream satisfy the many who come to relax, meet friends, and have fun. Many a summer day or evening has been enjoyed on the Terrace by students, alumni, UW staff, and others sitting on the iconic Sunburst chairs to enjoy the many activities including music from the stage. |

AROUND THE TERRACE
So much is packed into the small, but impressive Alumni Park right next to the Terrace. It opened in the fall of 2017 and "celebrates the achievements of Badger graduates around the globe, through art installations, information stations, and commemorations". It shows how well the Wisconsin Idea came to life and inspires. In March 2018, the Park won a prestigious award from the American Society of Landscape Architects in the general design competition.
"Well Red", a Bucky Badger sculpture, sits atop a pile of books. This is one of everyone's favorite - often people line up to take photos of themselves with Bucky. It reminds us that this is maybe Wisconsin's version of Rodin's famous sculpture "The Thinker". |
