Onalaska
Dash-Park Amphitheater
On June 9, 2018, Dash-Park was dedicated. It included a performance by the Onalaska High School Jazz Band, remarks by Mayor Joe Chilsen and Matt Boshcka (who operates the next door restaurant), and was highlighted with a reading by Linda Ellis of her poem "The Dash" for which the Park is named. Also present and speaking were Dave and Barb Skogen, local philanthropists, who masterminded its creation and subsequently donated it as a gift to the City. The Skogen's have throughout the years supported many local charitable activities. Their success comes from the grocery business - first starting as a small local IGA grocery store that then grew into the Festival Foods grocery stores which are located throughout WI.
The downtown Onalaska site was transformed from a half block that had several old, vacant buildings into a well used Park for concerts, and for walking, and just sitting and enjoying the moment. It complements the Great River Landing, located across the road and a local restaurant developed adjacent to the Park. The DBS GROUP was the designer/contractor for this small area footprint which holds a small stage that offers weekly concerts in the summer. Its attractive design includes large limestone boulders for seating on the sloped site. At the top, a curved flowing lattice-type pagoda (matching the design of the stage's rooftop) has more seating with swings and benches. Interspersed between the boulders attractive native plantings grow.
